“What is Christ Consciousness?” was the question Dr. Doug asked me on his Inspire Vision Podcast. I did it with him at 5:30 am (he was in Thailand. “Same as Buddha Mind”, was my immediate reply, which he found surprising, I think.

I have written about Christ Consciousness in my book, The Meditation Book. I now realize that “Christ” is a term of respect. It applies to all our spiritual Master Teachers throughout human history. And includes Jesus, Buddha, Lao Tzu, Moses, Muhammad, and Yogananda. And many others reached a level of enlightenment. It could be called a “Christ.””

The Encyclopedia Britannica says that in ancient India, the title ‘Buddha’ referred to an enlightened being. They had awakened from the sleep of ignorance and achieved freedom from suffering. According to various traditions of Buddhism, buddhas have existed in the past, and will exist in the future”. Most people think of Gautama Buddha when they hear “Buddha.” However, he was the 28th Buddha in one lineage of enlightened humans.

A Nice Lively Discussion Ensued about “What is Christ Consciousness?”

Dr. Doug and I both grew up in a Christian Church in which Jesus was referred to as “Christ”. In fact, when I was little, I thought Jesus’ last name was “Christ”. In my church upbringing, there was a lot of talk in sermons and at Sunday School. They talked about Jesus being the “one and only Son of God”. Our use of “Christ” was defined as “anointed one” and only applied to Jesus. Doug and I agreed, however, that neither of us subscribed to that religious teaching anymore.

He wanted to know how a human becomes a Christ or a Buddha. I shared my opinion that meditation is the most direct path to enlightenment. Not the only path, but the most direct path. Quieting the human mind, the ego, during meditation opens the path. It lets us get to know our Higher Selves, our Souls.  Which can lead to enlightenment for some.

Jesus spoke about who we “really” are as humans in this way, “The Kingdom of Heaven (Spirit) lies within”. Within each of us. An” imprisoned splendor” waiting to be let out according to the poet and mystic Robert Browning. This is what higher forms of meditation promote.

What We Didn’t Get to Talk About

What we didn’t get to talk about is a mindfulness process that I developed, which helps to address “What is Christ Consciousness?” And how can we ordinary humans get even a little touch of the experience of Buddha Mind.

Here is a mindfulness phrase that I repeat to myself—”I Breathe Christ Consciousness”. Very simple but very powerful. By saying these words, If we get the feeling or experience of what the words mean. Such mindfulness exercises put the user in a state of mind stimulated by the words.

Say “Breathing Christ Consciousness” with reverence to experience what Christ Consciousness “is”. Whomever that user might be. (For other mindfulness exercises see The Mindfulness Book.)

“Christ Consciousness” Taken One Step Further

This exercise can be taken one step further. When we do this “breathing” from our Heart Center, our Center of Love. The exercise then becomes “I Lovingly Breathe Christ Consciousness from my Heart Center”. Do this a few times with sincerity and deep feeling. Intend to open up to it and change our entire morning, if not our whole lives.

That’s where the conversation was headed, but we didn’t get there. But now I have expressed it. Dr. Doug will be pleased.

One final tip. Remind yourself to say “I Lovingly Breathe Christ Consciousness from my Heart Center”’. Or simply “I Breathe Christ Consciousness (or Buddha Mind)”.  Write the phrase on a 3 x 5 card in bright green and put it on your desk where you will see it.

Blessed be.
